Haarlem history

Haarlem is a city and municipality at the same time located in the bank of river Spaarne. It is the capital of North Holland. It is a medium size city with 162,914 inhabitants. The neighboring cities of Haarlem are Bloemendaal, Hoofddorp, Zandvoort and Haarlemmermeer. This city was first mentioned in a document from the 10th century. In 1245 Haarlem received its recognition as a city from William II of Haarlem. This city has a rich history with old architectural buildings such as De Adriaan, Meat Hall, Taylers Hofje, The Dome etc. which attract tourists to visit the city.

De Adriaan

De Adriaan a Wind Mill was built in 1778 by Adriaan de Boois (an Amsterdam enterpreneur). On may 19, 1779 , the mill started to use for grinding tuff into trass. Tras is added to masonry motor to make walls water light. In 1802, this mill was sold to a tobacconist, and he turn this mill into a tobacco factory.

Hannie Schaft Memoria

Jannetje Johanna (Jo) Schaft (16 September 1920 – 17 April 1945) was a Dutch resistance fighter during World War II.
